Sheetrock and Drywall Repair

Sheetrock repair is the work of cutting out damaged wall or ceiling board, backing and fastening a new piece in its place, then taping, floating and texturing it so the patch disappears under paint. Sheetrock and drywall are the same thing. All Types Remodeling and Repair has done this work out of Ocean Springs since 2011, and it is the service we get called for most after carpentry.

Is sheetrock the same as drywall?

Yes. Drywall is the product, a gypsum core wrapped in paper, sold in sheets. Sheetrock is a brand name that became the everyday word for it on this coast. When somebody here says sheetrock repair and somebody else says drywall repair, they are asking for the same job. We use both words because our customers do.

What causes drywall damage in a Gulf Coast home?

Water, movement and impact, in that order. A roof leak, an overflowing gutter or a failed flashing detail lets water into the ceiling, and the gypsum core swells and sags. A slow supply line or a tub surround that has lost its seal soaks the lower wall. Storm wind lifts a soffit or a shingle edge and the ceiling stain shows up weeks later.

Movement cracks are different. They show up at the corners of doors and windows and along the ceiling line, because that is where the framing flexes. A crack that keeps coming back after two patches is telling you the movement is still happening, and we will say so instead of floating over it a third time.

How is a drywall hole repaired properly?

We square the hole up and cut back to sound board, past any soft or stained gypsum. Small holes get a backer strip and a patch. Anything bigger gets cut back to the framing so the new piece lands on solid studs or joists and can be screwed down flat.

Then the seams get taped and floated in coats, each one wider than the last, with drying time between them. That is the step people rush. A patch floated in one heavy pass shrinks, telegraphs its edges, and shows as a bright rectangle the first time evening light rakes across the wall. Three thin coats and a proper sand is what makes the repair vanish.

Ceiling water damage repair

A stained ceiling is two jobs, and doing only the second one is why the stain comes back. First we find where the water got in. That may be a roof or flashing problem, a rotted fascia and soffit run letting water in at the eave, or a plumbing leak in the floor above.

Once the source is closed and the cavity has dried, we cut out the swollen board rather than skim over it. Wet gypsum never regains strength, and paper facing that has been soaked will keep feeding mould behind fresh paint. We replace the board, tape it, float it, match the texture, and prime the repair with a stain blocking primer so no brown ring bleeds back through the topcoat.

Matching the texture on the wall

Most homes here carry a sprayed or hand applied texture, and a smooth patch in a textured wall is as obvious as no patch at all. We match what is already there, whether it is a knockdown, an orange peel, a stomped ceiling or a hand troweled finish, and feather the new texture into the old so the transition is not a hard line.

Colour is the last piece. A repaired patch always drinks paint differently from a wall that has been up for years, so a spot touch up usually flashes. Painting corner to corner on the affected wall or ceiling is the honest way to finish it, and we will tell you when a job needs that.
